Shower waterproofing

Shower waterproofing

What is it?

Shower waterproofing pretoria eastShower waterproofing is protecting your tiles and underlying structures from the constant water that the shower is exposed to. This should be properly done by a waterproofing expert before you install your shower and bathroom for the best results.

However, if you have a shower that has been poorly waterproofed in the past, waterproofing can also be done as a post-building procedure where the tiles can either be removed to properly waterproof the entire structure again, or if the existing tiles are still in good condition, topical waterproofing is also an option.

How is it done?

When waterproofing is done before the installation of a shower or after the removal of the existing tiles, the surfaces must be carefully cleaned and prepared to ensure that the waterproofing membrane with adhere properly to the surface. The waterproofing product must then be applied with great care and precision to ensure that even the smallest spot is not missed, as this would allow water through.

The first coat must then be allowed to dry completely before a second coat is applied with equal care and precision. We use only the highest quality waterproofing product to ensure a job that will last as long as your shower does. Depending on the material of the tiles, another waterproofing layer may be applied after the tiling is complete, this is because some materials are porous, and water entering them will cause them to become saturated and eventually crack and break. Materials that are not porous include porcelain and ceramic.

When topical waterproofing is needed, we will usually remove the grout between the tiles and replace it with a silicone filler which waterproofs these spaces. Depending on the material of the tiles an additional waterproof layer may be added over them to complete the job.

Why you need it and how it will benefit you.

Because your bathroom is the place in your home that has the most exposure to water, if you want it to last for years and years, waterproofing is absolutely essential. If you don’t waterproof your shower properly, the damage can go much deeper than just your shower or bathroom.

Some results of not waterproofing a shower include the corrosion of any metal in the structure, including your pipes and the possible warping or rotting of any wooden structures inside your house. More dangerous for you and your family are the formation of mould or mildew which can harm your health and are extremely difficult to get rid of properly.

Thorough and professional shower waterproofing is a choice that will save you some serious and expensive problems in the long run.

Damp Proofing

Damp Proofing

What is it?

Damp proofing differs from Damp Proofing pretoria eastwaterproofing in that it protects the surface from soil moisture and water vapour, while waterproofing protects from these as well as from heavy exposure to liquid water.

Waterproofing is usually selected for foundations in areas with very high water tables or continuous rainfall where the foundations are likely to be exposed to liquid water often.

Damp proofing is sometimes used on foundations in very dry areas where the foundations are unlikely to come into contact with liquid water. A popular choice though is to waterproof foundations and then damp proof the structure of the house above ground.

How is it done?

Damp proofing is done by cleaning the surface to be treated with great care, as any dust could cause the product to lift, allowing damp in. The damp proofing course or product is then carefully applied to all parts of the surface by a waterproofing professional at exactly the right thickness, and allowed to dry completely before a second coat is added. Once the second coat has been added it must be given time to dry entirely before the surface can be declared damp proof and paint or coverings can be applied over the treatment.

Why you need it and how it will benefit you.

Damp proofing will protect your home from two types of damp, rising damp and penetrating damp. Rising damp is caused by water rising through the walls, and is usually caused by exposure to soil moisture at ground level or high water vapor levels.  Penetrating damp is caused by an issue with a downpipe or gutter system where water is constantly dripping onto the walls, never giving them time to dry out.

It can also be caused by frequent exposure to rain. Without damp proofing either of these types of damp can cause problems for you and your family. The most dangerous of these is the formation of mildew and mould which can cause various health problems such as aggravating asthma in people who already suffer from it, or causing breathing difficulty in people who don’t.

The presence of the spores in the air released by these organisms is what causes these breathing difficulties.  Other inconvenient and costly problems are the damage that damp will cause to your paint and plaster, meaning more frequent repainting and re-plastering.

To keep your home damp free, your family’s health in excellent condition and your pockets safe from frequent paint jobs, call us today at TT Waterproofing to discuss your damp proofing needs!

Concrete Waterproofing

Concrete Waterproofing

What is it?

Concrete Waterproofing pretoria eastAlthough concrete seems absolutely solid, when it hardens the materials actually separate ever so slightly, forming tiny airways within the concrete. These airways are referred to as pores, meaning that the concrete can be described as porous, just like a sponge.

The hardened concrete has essentially become one giant, hard sponge! As we know, nothing wreaks havoc on a structure quite like damp, and once water gets into your concrete it is there to stay, and usually to accumulate over time.

Concrete waterproofing is also often referred to as cementitious waterproofing, but the two terms refer to the same process. Getting your concrete waterproofed by a reliable contractor means ensuring it will remain water free for as long as you need it to stand.

How is it done?

Concrete waterproofing involves applying a thin layer of highly protective film over the concrete. This is a process that requires experience and skill to apply the perfect thickness, as if it is too thin to will not fully waterproof the concrete, and if it is slightly too thick it will not set properly, but can be extremely difficult to remove. Once this correctly applied layer has been allowed to set, your concrete will be entirely safe from all water.

Why you need it and how it will benefit you

If you want your concrete structures to last, you need to seriously consider concrete waterproofing.  Perhaps the most detrimental case of water damage to concrete is in the foundations of a house. Because this underground concrete is usually in contact with ground water, the pores easily become saturated, weakening the structure from an early stage.

Within a few years, or in extreme cases months, the entire structure will begin to show signs of the weakened foundation. The earliest warnings are sudden cracks in walls caused by movement in the foundations. Many quickly built new structures these days begin to show these signs relatively fast, as contractors try to skip important steps such as waterproofing to get projects completed faster. A properly waterproofed foundation will add strength and years to your home.

Another common problem caused by concrete that hasn’t been waterproofed is when tile or linoleum flooring is placed on top of it. As the concrete becomes saturated, these expensive floorings can begin to lift or warp, causing a very costly and inconvenient problem in your home.

To save yourself the cost and headache of these very serious problems, contact TT Waterproofing today to discuss your concrete waterproofing needs.

Waterproofing Company

Things to Keep in Mind When Hiring a Waterproofing Company

It is always a difficult thing when hiring any type of contractor. How do you know you can trust the company and the person you are speaking with?

Here are three things we consider to be very important. If you speak with a waterproofing company, and they do not display these qualities, you should consider moving on to the next contractor.

Quality of Communication

Waterproofing Company pretoria east

You should pay careful attention when speaking to a prospective waterproofing company. A company that is worth hiring will be open and responsive to any questions that you have. They should be happy to discuss even the smallest of your concerns, and give you detailed answers that put your mind at ease.

You should also take care to notice if they ask for specific details about the structure that they will be working on to know if they take individual structure requirements into consideration when planning your unique job.

Remember, every structure is different, and a good waterproofing company will take that into consideration and want to provide you with the best possible service for you. If a company tries to rush you in your conversations or move to a quote and setting a date too fast, consider these as warning signals. Waterproofing is a big job that will make all the difference to the lifespan of your structure, so take these initial conversations into careful consideration.

Pricing

Waterproofing is a detailed and intricate process, and one which needs to be done with precision right down to the very details. You want your contractor to be using high quality materials and have well trained staff. Before investigating contractors, do some research about average prices for the services you seek.

When your waterproofing company gives you a quote, you should be concerned about anything that seems significantly overpriced or underpriced. If the price is much higher than industry standard, you are probably being taken for a ride. However, if the price seems too good to be true it is likely that the contractor intends to cut corners somewhere, perhaps in one of the steps of the process, or in the quality of materials or the skill of the labour employed.  Watch out for these warning signs.

Reputation and Professionalism

A good waterproofing company should be able to provide you with some references from clients who were happy with a job well done. A happy client is always willing to take the time to review a contractor, so if your potential company is making claims about their abilities but is no able to back these up with some satisfied customers you should be worried.

After the initial conversations about the job, as well as an inspection of the site, a professional contractor will provide you with a detailed written proposal and contract that is easy for you to read and understand, and should be willing to give you some time to make your final decision.

Choosing a waterproofing company is a decision that will impact your life significantly. It means the difference between having continuous problems with a structure or being stress free for a number of years. It is worth it to take the time to find the company that’s the right fit for you.

Why not give us a call at TT Waterproofing today to see whether we meet your standards?
